Kim, McGarry Win 2017 Warrior Cup in 13-15 Age Division
Janice Kim and Brady McGarry are the 2017 Warrior Cup Champions in the 13-15 age division. This is an invite-only, 18-hole event featuring players who have previously won tournaments on the Valspar Junior Tour earlier this summer.
Kim, a 14-year-old from Edina, put together another strong performance with a 1-over 73 to win by one shot over playing partner Sofia Morin of Buffalo. Kim has been playing extremely well as of late with the Warrior Cup being her second major victory in the past week after she claimed the Players Tour Match Play Championship last Thursday.
“I felt a lot more confident after winning last week,” emphasized Kim. “At the start of July, I really couldn’t trust myself with some shots on the course. I needed to focus on hitting shots in the middle of the green.”
Her round wasn’t perfect but she got timely birdies when she needed including two on the back at the par-4 10th and par-5 12th.
“I would say my game as a whole was working well. I screwed myself over on a few holes,” she said. “Putting was great and what helped me today.”
Morin would take second place honors and defending champion Isabella McCauley of Inver Grove Heights took third with a 4-over 76.
McGarry, a 13-year-old from Grand Forks, N.D., fired the low round on the day with an even-par 72; good enough for a two shot victory over Logan Lillehaug of Frederic, Wis. and Lucas Feterl of Plymouth who finished tied for second. Lillehaug would later defeat Feterl in a playoff to claim second place.
“It feels great to win,” said McGarry who notched his third win of the year in his final tournament. “I was putting really well and my driver was going straight today.”
His day was highlighted by a 3-under 33 on the back nine including three birdies in four holes to finish.
